Bible Note: Hi, prayon... good posts! "Stigma" might not be a proper word here. Let us remember that these rules were part of the Law specified by God Himself. As such, they must necessarily have been perfect, right, and entirely appropriate. (Psalm 19:7) Looking into this question I discovered that the Talmud has an account where students asked Rabbi Yochai, "Why does the Torah require a woman who has a child to bring a sacrifice? What sin has she committed?" He replied, "When a woman sits on the birth stool and feels the pangs of childbirth, she swears that she will never again have intercourse with her husband. Obviously, this is an oath that she cannot keep since it was made under duress. Moreover, she is required to have intercourse with her husband. The Torah therefore requires the woman to bring an atonement offering to atone for her vain oath." The students then ask "What is the reason that if a woman gives birth to a boy she is unclean for seven days, but if she gives birth to a girl she is unclean for fourteen days?" He replied, "God knows a person's innermost thoughts. He knows that if a woman gives birth to a son, she is very happy. She changes her mind about the oath that she made and wishes to have intercourse with her husband again. She is therefore clean after seven days. However, if she gives birth to a girl, she feels bad about the girl and worries about the pains that her daughter will have to suffer as well. Therefore, a longer time elapses before she regrets her oath, and she must wait fourteen days until she is ritually clean." Of course, I would take this Talmudic explanation with a large (kosher) grain of salt. :-) In Him, Doc |
