Bible Question:
10:7 Why couldnt go out of the meeting tent with the Lord's anointing oil on them? 10:8-11 why couldn't they drink wine or stong drink. And why did they have to distinguish between holy and the common. and clean and unclean. What did they mean by this? |
Bible Answer: Dear Melissa In response to Lev. 10:6-7 they were not to go away from the door (the entrance or court of the tabernacle), to take part in the burial of the dead, lest they should die, for the anointing oil of the Lord God was upon them. The anointing oil was the symbol of the Spirit of God, which is a Spirit of life, and therefore has nothing in common with death, but rather conquers death, and sin, which is the source of death (cf. Lev_21:12). In response to Lev. 10:8-11 the priests were not to drink wine or other alcoholic beverages before going into the tabernacle. If their senses were dulled by alcohol, they might repeat Nadab and Abihu's sin and bring something unholy into the worship ceremony. In addition, drinking would disqualify them to teach the people God's requirements of self-discipline. Drunkenness was associated with pagan practice and the Jewish priests were supposed to be distinctively different. "That we may put difference between holy and unholy" - This is a strong reason why they should drink wine nor strong drink, that their understanding being clear, and their judgment correct, they might be always able to discern between the clean and the unclean, and ever pronounce righteous judgment. with love, David |
