NASB | Jeremiah 35:17 "Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, 'Behold, I am bringing on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them; because I spoke to them but they did not listen, and I have called them but they did not answer.'" |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Jeremiah 35:17 "Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, 'Behold (hear this), I am bringing on Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them, but they have not listened, and I have called to them, but they have not answered.'" |
Bible Question: What is the difference between God speaking and calling? |
Bible Answer: Hi Mommabps, The meaning of the word "spoken" in the Hebrew (according to the Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon) is "to declare, to command, to warn or to threaten". The meaning of the word "called" in the Hebrew (according to Strong's) is "to bid, to invite, or to summon". Both definitions are specific to the context in which they were used in the scripture you cited. I haven't read the scripture in context, but perhaps what was happening could be likened to calling a toddler to come into the house, for lunch, several times. As you know, since you're also a mom, the toddler will not listen the first or second time that we call. However, in our third attempt to coax them inside, our tone of voice, and perhaps our words, may change: no longer are we inviting them; we're now telling them! "Get inside this minute, or else..." Hope this helps! |
