Bible Question:
Hello, I'm wondering if you can help me by offering your perspective. I've been reading Isaiah 7:10-16 ratherly closely as I know that Jews and Christians have very different interpretations of this section of the text (the Hebrew Bible). I'm having a hard time understanding what a Jewish reader might take from it as opposed to what a Christian would think of. Any assitance you can offer me to better my understanding of the aforementioned passage would be greatly appreciated Aretha |
Bible Answer: Hi, Aretha... Welcome to the forum! Don't forget to fill our your user profile. When ever I see that name Aretha, I can't help but think of "the Queen of Soul." :-) But none of that helps with your question, does it? This passage has been in great contention between Jewish and Christian readers for about as long as there have been Christian readers. Up to that time, it wasn't a passage that drew much attention. In Jewish thinking, the chapter isn't even a Messianic prophecy. They see it strictly as a prophetic utterance of Isaiah for the days of Ahaz. To them, the Messianic issue is a purely Christian eisegesis. More specifically, to Jewish interpreters, the Hebrew word "haAlmah" (translated virgin in most texts) of Isaiah 7:14 does not mean a woman who has not had sexual relations with a man. They argue that if the writer of the passage had intended this meaning, he would have used the word "bethulah" (cf Deuteronomy 22:23) instead. There are other interpretations in Jewish thinking, but that's the main one. Of course, as believers we have the advantage of what is known as the "infallible rule of interpretation;" i.e., that Scripture interpret Scripture (2 Peter 1:20-21; Hebrews 1:1-2; etc.). Hence, we have the explanation of Isaiah 7:14 given in the additional light of the New Testament (see Matthew 1:23). In Him, Doc |
