Bible Question:
Hello Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I read this verse and cross-referenced to Eph 4:30 and 1 Thess 5:19. What exactly is grieving or quenching the Spirit of God? |
Bible Answer: always lerning: Ephesians 4:30 follows the instructions in verses 28 and 29 listing some actions that grieve the Holy Spirit. Unwholesome words we speak, stealing, laziness, and selfishness. Then in verse 31 Paul continues the list of things that grieve the Holy spirit, bitterness, wrath, anger, slander, malice. Paul give some example of things pleasing for us to be like, kind, tender hearted, forgiving each other as Christ has forgiven us. In Thessalonians 5:19, Paul is refering to tossing the Spiritual gifts the Holy Spirit has given us aside. Pauls warns us to avoid every form of evil, and to be careful how we live, continue to do good and use the gifts given to us. Both verses point to what displeases the Holy Spirit and what does bring glory to the Trinity. When we quench a fire with water we put the fire out. When we quench the Holy Spirit "fire" of the power of God out of our lives. This happens when we do the things Paul mentions in the verses before and after the verses. I hope this gives a little better understanding. justme |
