Bible Question: What does the Tearms A.D.and B.C. really mean |
Bible Answer: Time began when God created the heavens and the earth. Time, which began with the creation of the earth until Christ's birth, is referred to as B.C. The time since Christ's birth is commonly referred to as A.D. Hence, B.C. means "before Christ". A.D. stands for "anno Domini" (latin), which means "the year of our Lord". When Jesus began His ministry on earth, He quoted the following, from the prophet Isaiah: Is 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; Is 61:2 To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD. His purpose in quoting the prophet was to proclaim that the prophecy was being fulfilled through Him. Notice that the Lord did not recite the remaining words in Is 61:2, concerning vengeance. That is because the Lord will not judge mankind until He returns to the earth a second time. God bless you! prazn |
