NASB | Isaiah 59:19 So they will fear the name of the LORD from the west And His glory from the rising of the sun, For He will come like a rushing stream Which the wind of the LORD drives. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 59:19 So they will fear the name of the LORD from the west And His glory from the rising of the sun. For He will come in like a narrow, rushing stream Which the breath of the LORD drives [overwhelming the enemy]. [Matt 8:11; Luke 13:29] |
Bible Question: How could i have found the appropriate resource materials to have discovered why the NASB does not use the word "Standard" as doe the KJV at Is 59:19? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Fcampos777! Another excellent question.. When doing word studies or studies on the textual "variants" of different verses, it would always be handy to have many different translations at your disposal. I like to use the NKJV, KJV, NASB, NIV and Amplified Bibles especially for word/verse studies, since these translations provide a "wide spectrum" in their methods of translation. Do you know Greek and/or Hebrew? If you know either of these languages, then I would suggest pulling out your copy of Greek or Hebrew when studying a verse and parsing the verbs and the articles in the verse for yourself. That way, you will begin to see firsthand the "translational difficulties" that certain verses present.. :) However, if you do not know either Greek or Hebrew, then I suggest using either Strong's Concordance or the NIV Exhaustive Concordance (which is excellent!) and a Greek or Hebrew Interlinear Study Bible, which are also great tools. You can find and order these kind of resources at http://www.christianbook.com. A last option (but a very good one) is to surround yourself with a good number of resources to draw from, like a few detailed commentaries or Study Bibles that are excellent in their verse by verse approach. Among the Study Bibles that I use are The MacArthur Study Bible, The Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible, The Nelson NKJV Study Bible and the Zondervan NASB Study Bible. The Jamieson, Faucett and Brown Commentary along with Barnes' Notes on the Bible are excellent commentaries that provide some much needed depth on verse by verse insight. An excellent website where you can gain access to such useful sources is http://www.blueletterbible.org. May the Lord bless you in your continued studies! Nolan |
