AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 58:6 "[Rather] is this not the fast which I choose, To undo the bonds of wickedness, To tear to pieces the ropes of the yoke, To let the oppressed go free And break apart every [enslaving] yoke? [Acts 8:23] |
Bible Question: what is the importance of fasting? |
Bible Answer: Fasting in the Old Testament was common during mourning, repentance, and to show humility. Sometimes it was done as an attempt to get prayers heard. Isaiah 58 shows compassion to be an acceptable 'fast'. Jesus indicates in Matthew 6:16 that if you fast don't do it to be seen by people. The disciples did not fast according to Mark 2 until after Jesus' death. A scribe added Matthew 17:21 which makes it sound like fasting was necessary for prayers to be heard to heal a demoniac. |
