Bible Question:
This is a question that has been on my mind for quite some time, and I wonder if someone can help me out with an answere. How do scholars come up with the assumption that there is a long time span between Genesis 1:1, and 1:2? When I read it all I see is one time frame, like it all happened at the same time, but I could be wrong, because I have done no research at all on the subject. I would not even know where to begin to do research. If someone can help me, please do...Thanks |
Bible Answer: Great question! The word used in Gen 1:2 for, 'formless' is also the word in Isaiah 45:18 for 'a waste place'! So, Gen. says the earth was fromless and void, but Isaiah said, "the LORD did not create the earth formless." So, how did it get that way? Look at Jeremiah 4:23, this is the only place in the Bible (about 92 percent sure) that the hebrew words for formless and void are used together in the same sequence as in Gen 1:2! The context suggests Jer. 4:19-28 that GOD is grieved over the earth, and that it is formless and void, so he judges the earth. Hence, "gap" theorist believe that there were civilizations on earth before man, they were corrupted, probably by satan/lucifer's pride and ambition, and this made the earth formless and void. So, GOD destroyed the world with a flood (see 2 Peter 3:4-5, "by the word of GOD the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water through which the world at that time was destroyed being flooded with water" see 'at that time' is this the same time as creation, is Peter saying that the present world was created by and through water;because, the former world was destroyed by water?!) which is were Gen. 1:2 picks up,"and darkness was over the surface of the deep" some may believe that this is still describing the judgement, see "the deep" as symbol for sin and evil, see also Jer 4:23, "they had no light." But, the long and short is, somewhere in Gen 1:2 we pick up with the world covered with darkness and the LORD "reshapes" it, see that the only time GOD 'creates' anything is when he makes creatures. The other commands, "Let there be," could be reshapings of the already patterned universe!! Hope this helps, it is an interesting debate, but ultimately meaningless in the quest for Truth in Christ! However, I do hear creationist bad-mouthing 'gap' folks for no scriptural basis, when actually there is some; especially, if your into the study of hebrew and greek word links!! Hope this sheds some light on the situation. Please tell me what you think! And, if you don't have a personal profile, fill one out!! GOD bless!! |
