NASB | Ecclesiastes 2:1 I said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself." And behold, it too was futility. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Ecclesiastes 2:1 I said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure and gratification; so enjoy yourself and have a good time." But behold, this too was vanity (futility, meaninglessness). [Luke 12:19, 20] |
Bible Question: Can anyone tell me why the New International Version substitutes the word "meaningless" throughout Ecclesiastes for the more commonly used word "vanity"? |
Bible Answer: I'm not exactly sure why the NIV substituted the word "vanity" for "meaningless". However, the dictionary uses the word worthless as a definition for vanity. So maybe worthless can be translated to meaningless. Vanity is a term used to refer to temporal things that are of no spiritual profit. Such as materialism. I believe the translators of the NIV was trying to emphasize the fact that vanity or temporal things are of no spiritual profit, thus, are only of earthly good. Therefore, in the spiritual realm, they can be viewed as meaningless. |
