Bible Question: I was studying Prov. 6; 16-19 and had a question why does it say there are six things the Lord hates and seven that are detestable? What accounts for the difference? Distinguish between the hated and detestable? Are these what is refered to as the seven deadly sins? |
Bible Answer: In my exceedingly humble opinion, what you are seeing in Proverbs 6:16 with the "six" and then "seven" is a Hebraic literary idiom. (The seven things are itemized in verses 17 through 20.) Regarding "hate" versus "detest" I believe this is another literary device. The Old Testament is full of phrases that are repeated in this fashion, but mean the same thing, probably done for emphasis. A modern example might be if I said to you, "I am looking for a job. Yes, I'm really pounding the pavement." |
