Bible Question: is drinking wine a sin |
Bible Answer: Dear Andra: Thank you for your question. Biblical condemnation pertains to intoxication, i.e., drunkenness. Note this passage in Proverbs 20:1: "Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise." Please see also Luke 21:34; Rom. 13:13; Gal. 5:12; 1 Pet. 4:30. Christians hold differing views on the subject of the usee of wine -- whether to use it in moderation as a beverage or whether to abstain from it (and all other alcoholic drinks) altogether.altogether. ..... My own view is this: I choose not to drink because (1) I don't enjoy it and don't like the "buzz" it gives. (2) I take medication for cardiac arrhythmias and have been advised by my cardiologist that alcohol has the clear potential to aggravate the condition. (3) It is an unnecessary expense. (4) It can lead to addiction: no drinker of wine or any other alcoholic beverage ever started drinking with the deliberate aim of becoming addicted, that is, an alcoholic. (5) And last but by no means least, I take the view that drinking does not enchance, but can in fact dilute, the effectiveness of my witness as a follower of Jesus Christ. Thanks for your question, and it seems to me that it is one that calls for more than a simple yes or no. I pray that in some measure my answer will prove helpful to you. --Hank |
