Bible Question:
The bible speaks of backsliding and falling from grace, obviously these have different meanings or wouldnt be listed as such. Once a person deliberately rebells against God and is chastened of the Lord, but continues to rebell, his heart becomes harden thru the deceitfulness of sin. At this point I believe you are in a backslidden state but I believe God still woes his children back to him thru the Holy Spirit conviction but if continued in that state you can fall from grace meaning you know longer have Gods protection on your life or Gods grace has been removed, you are considered a cast away. As the children wanderered in the wilderness for forties years yet God provided for them , obviously they were backslidden complaining of the provisions that God was making for them during this time. Backsliding as stated in Prov 14:14 is selfish absorption, Mathew 24:12 Religious Indifference, Luke 9:62 Unfitness for the Kingdom, Gal 4:9 Bondage to forms, Rev 2:4 Loss of Spiritual Entusiasm Even though when you repent to the Lord, backslidden and fallen from grace is restored thru the blood shed of Christ. Please give scripture references please. Thanks |
Bible Answer: Hi Deb4souls, Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your question and your references. Proverbs 14:14, NASB, "The backslider in heart will have his fill of his own ways, But a good man will be satisfied with his." Here we have a contrast between the backslider's ways and the good man's ways. I'm tempted to suggest that it is a contrast of a man in "his own ways" and the good man living in His [God's] way. This could be the interpretation with a mere capital H. But to my mind it is too far away from the mention of Deity back in verse 2 where it is talking also about the crooked man who despises Him; so I would go with "his". What do you think? In any case a look at the NKJ will show us that the verse is recognizing that the good man "will be satisfied from above". The NKJ has the literal meaning as [Lit. from above himself]. The NASB has Proverbs 14:26, "In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And his children will have refuge." [Or, His] is the marginal note. The NKJ has decided definitely on His children. So in other words, the good man will be satisfied in the things of above and is a child of God. The backslider will walk in his own ways. Proverbs 14:2, "He who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord, But he who is crooked in his ways despises Him." The backslider is one who has lost his reverence for God and forgotten the things of the Spirit. When he did not know God, he was a slave of sin or a slave to people who were ungodly and leading him astray. Paul did not want him to go back to those things and be enslaved again for if he had been born of the Spirit he was set free in Christ. Galatians 5:1, "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery." People are sometimes slow to become Christians because they think that they will lose their freedom but it is the opposite. They become free to do good instead of being a slave of sin. People who are already Christians are sometimes tempted to go back to the Law with its slavery. Tempted to go back to physical things (circumcision and keeping the Law in the case of the Galatians) instead of spiritual things of faith working through love. Galatians 5:7, "You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion did not come from (Him) who calls you." Galatians 5:24, "Now those who belong to Christ (Jesus) have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit." From the heart, Ray |
