Subject: Did it really matter? |
Bible Note: I'm not to sure about the pomegranite, but I know at least one purpose for the bells. Once a year the high priest went into the Holy of Holies to sprinkle blood on the mercy seat. If for any reason the priest was unclean, or did something wrong during his routine he would die. Since no one else was allowed to enter the room they had to be able to tell if something went wrong and have some way of retrieving the dead priest. As long as the priest was moving around and doing his duties the bells on his garment would make noise. If the noise stopped for any length of time it would be assumed the priest was dead. His body would be pulled out by a rope that was tied to the priests ankle before he entered. |
