Bible Question: Why was the top of the ark called the mercy seat? |
Bible Answer: Greetings prayon! Here's a little commentary on the "mercy seat".. "25:17 a mercy seat. Lit., a covering. It was not only the lid for the ark, but also the place where sins were covered, thus the place of propitiation." [Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible] "25:17 mercy. Or "atonement." It speaks of reconciliation, the divine act of grace whereby God draws to Himself and makes "at one" with Him those who were once alienated from Him. In the OT, the shed blood of sacrificial offerings effected atonement (see Lev. 17:11 and note); in the NT, the blood of Jesus, shed once for all time, does the same (see Rom. 3:25; 1 John 2:2). mercy seat. Or "atonement cover" (see note on Lev. 16:2). That God's symbolic throne was capped with an atonement cover signified His great mercy toward His people- only such a God can be revered (see Ps. 130:3-4)."
