Bible Question: Why in John chapter 19 :34 the soldier pierce Jesus in the side when they found he was already dead. |
Bible Answer: InGodsWill, John 19:36-37 explains the prophetic fulfillment. Here is the practical: Romans in order to speed the death of the crucified would break the legs so the victim could not push himself up to breath and would be asphyxiated. But Jessu appeared already to be dead, so they pierced his side just to be sure, rather than breaking his leg bones. For prophetic references see: Ex 12:46; Num 9:12; Ps 34:21; Num 21:9; Zec 12:10.
