Subject: Why a broken heart? |
Bible Note: Hank, that was a delightful response and wonderful illustration! You beautifully wrote a piece that shows how God would delight in a contrite heart.. Its been awhile since I've ridden a horse. :) As I think back on this question, several things come to mind like Psalm 69:20, where the Psalmist here is brokenhearted.. Another thing that points itself out is that the same God who desires mercy and not sacrifice (Hosea 6:6; Matt. 9:13, 12:7) is the same God that knows what is in man (John 2:25).. And He looks at the heart of a man (1 Sam. 16:7). This is the same God who would let one of us go after this world, while He stands watching, looking for us to return to Him (Luke 15:11-32). Its not that He wants bad things to happen to us, but they eventually will (Matt. 5:45). And when we get down and have despair because of the things of this life, we can always look towards Jesus! (Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:18) For He himself said, "Blessed are the meek.." (Matthew 5:5, 11:29) The best part of it is that He is still there when we have fallen! "But when he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men.'" And we have all been here, mired in despair, just like David who wrote, "For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise." For God seeks to have a relationship with us, and sometimes allows things to happen so that He get us right where He can use us! And He is also the God who will accept us with open arms again! "So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him." Then the Father rejoices with us and says, 'Behold! My child was dead and is alive again! He was lost, but now he is found!' No matter what has affected us or made us full of sorrow, we have a God above who has all of His majesty at His command to wipe away our every tear and to give us hope.. Nolan |
