Bible Question:
Psalm 41:"But You, O Lord, be merciful and gracious to me, and raise me up, that I may requite them". I'm fairly new to the Bible. I try to read a Psalm each day and would like my kids to read them because they model a relatioship and communication with God . But I really find it very frustrating when David CONSTANTLY goes on and on from Psalm to Psalm about all his enemies. What's going on here? Are ALL these people really that evil or is David including at least some of his personal/ political feelings in the Psalms. David had some major humans flaws...are those flaws wiped away in the words in Psalms. I'm really getting frustrated with my favorite book of the OT so Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. |
Bible Answer: Piper To understand David you must read of his life and the events that lead up to him becoming the King of Israel. Read 1 and 2 Samuel. Understand when David wrote many of the psalms he was being pursued by Saul who was trying to kill him out of envy. David complained to God about Saul but never once laid a hand on Saul. Rare is the man or woman that doesn't have an enemy. Jesus said we are to pray for them, but not to avenge ourselves on them. David did just that, short of a war, David never avenged himself. Even the wars David was forced to fight were the result of disobedience of the Children of Israel to completely rid the land of pagans. they got comfortable in what God had already given them and the stop doing what God had instructed them. The Bible is to be read complete and we are to rightly divide the Word. If something troubles you in the Bible ask God to reveal the real problem to you. Yes your children should either be reading the Bible themselves or having it read to them by you. Each story within the Bible also carries a lesson that if learned will profit us in our lives. EdB |
