Bible Question:
I am looking at Psalms 28:1, Psalms 28:9, Psalms 29:10, and Psalms 30:10. In these verses are words that can be interpretted as pronouns of Deity. They are "Rock, Shepherd, King, and Helper." l) Psalm 28:1, NASB, "To Thee, O Lord, I call; My rock, do not be deaf to me, Lest, if Thou be silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit." Psalm 28:1, NKJ, "To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock; Do not be silent to me,..." 2) Psalm 28:9, "Save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance; Be their shepherd also, and carry them forever." Psalm 28:9, NKJ, "Save Your people, And bless Your inheritance; Shepherd them also, And bear them up forever." 3) Psalm 29:10, NASB, "The Lord sat [as King] at the flood; Yes, the Lord sits as King forever." Psalm 29:10, NKJ, "The Lord sat [enthroned] at the Flood, And the Lord sits as King forever." 4) Psalm 30:10, "Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me; O Lord, be Thou my helper." Psalm 30:10, NKJ, "Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me; Lord, be my helper." How important to you are these words/pronouns and their interpretations? From the heart, Ray |
Bible Answer: These words speak directly at the nature of God. God is surely not a rock or a shepherd or even a kind in our conventional earthly sense of the words. Calling God a 'rock' is to create a direct metaphor, comparing the ways in which God is like a rock. He is strong, stedfast, sure, true, unchaning, unmoving, a rock. Similiarlly calling God a shepherd and a king is to compare those attributes of Him that are similiar to his great being. The unexplainable person of God can be glimpsed upon by the things of the world we may see. God is faithful, loving, merciful,(do a cross reference to every entrance God is called a shepherd to see what such a figure of speech hopes to show, even research how shepherds lived in bible times). Continuing, God rules supreme as King and is our greatest helper and provider. All of that is to say that God is greater then any earthly name can ascribe to Him. They can only help us to see him. Exodus 3 13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
