NASB | Psalm 2:7 ¶ "I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Psalm 2:7 ¶ "I will declare the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, 'You are My Son; This day [I proclaim] I have begotten You. [2 Sam 7:14; Heb 1:5; 3:5, 6; 2 Pet 1:17, 18] |
Bible Question: Why does God tell David that "Today I have begotten you?" I'm asking in relation to John 3:16, "...His only begotten Son." I notice also that psalm 2:7 puts son (David?) in uppercase. Why? |
Bible Answer: Greetings flinkywood, Here's a little bit of commentary about this verse.. "2:7 My Son. The legitimate Davidic king (2 Sam. 7:14). Today I have begotten You. The day of coronation. The NT relates this to Christ's resurrection (Acts 13:33-34; Rom. 1:4; Heb. 1:5; 5:5)." [Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible] "2:7 I will declare the decree. The installed mediator now recites the Lord's previously issued enthronement ordinance. You are My Son. This recalls 2 Sam. 7:8-16 as the basis for the Davidic king. It is also the only OT reference to the Father/Son relationship in the Trinity, a relationship planned in eternity past and realized in the incarnation, thus a major part of the NT. Today I have begotten You. This expresses the privileges of relationship, with its prophetic application to the Son- Messiah. This verse is quoted in the NT with reference to the birth of Jesus (Heb. 1:5,6) and also to His resurrection (Acts 13:33,34) as the ultimate fulfillments." [MacArthur Study Bible, pg. 744] Blessings to you, Nolan |
