Bible Question: As Job is a debate between God and Satan (Leviathan)in front of the hosts of angels, could this be prose as to show that Satan's tongue was "tied down" by trying to debate god? |
Bible Answer: Hi, docv, welcome to the forum! Although the word leviathan may signify Satan in Isaiah 27:1, I cannot find any contemporary or ancient scholars who see Job 41:1 as being anything other than an animal. (Of course, maybe this is a limitation of my resources or even of my search.) Instead, I find a lot of discussion (old and new) as to whether this creature is a crocodile or a hippopotamus. There is even some thought that it is a whale. The portion of the word "thanni" can mean serpent or whale. The "levi" portion means a conjunction, implying scales. It seems clear that God is simply saying here, "Can you control creation, as I do?" This being part of the long brow-beating that Job is getting from the Lord. To read anything more into this doesn't seem necessary nor warranted. In Him, Doc |
