Bible Question:
Greetings all, We know from reading the first 16 verses of this book that Queen Vashti refused to come at the King's command (v.12). How is it that the "deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes," ?? |
Bible Answer: Makarios To get a complete understanding of what is happening here you have to understand the request. The custom of the time was, that men of high (usually royal) positions would vie for the hand of the most beautiful woman of the land. Once he had secured her through marriage he would then command her to display herself sans clothing to all the court in a move to make all others jealous. There was a strange tension between the husband's command and the wife's obedience, something we don't understand. The woman while hating the humiliation would not refuse to do it, they would rather to suffer this humiliation than to be married to a man who was openly defied and therefore shamed. Also it said some even did it with great flourish enjoying the fact that their display made others jealous of their husband. In any case Vashti’s refusal broke that tension and opened the door for other wives to refuse and also it would bring shame on her husband. Rather than deal with that shame her husband basically rendered the marriage non-existent. Kind of like making the whole thing as something that never occurred. EdB |
