NASB | Nehemiah 1:11 "O Lord, I beseech You, may Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and the prayer of Your servants who delight to revere Your name, and make Your servant successful today and grant him compassion before this man." ¶ Now I was the cupbearer to the king. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Nehemiah 1:11 "Please, O Lord, let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and the prayer of Your servants who delight to [reverently] fear Your Name [Your essence, Your nature, Your attributes, with awe]; and make Your servant successful this day and grant him compassion in the sight of this man [the king]." For I was cupbearer to the king [of Persia]. |
Bible Question: where should I look to find the history of Nehiemiah the king's cupbearer and was he ever in captivity? If so will this explain why he is a servant. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Martha Allen, In 445 B.C. the Persian King Artaxerxes sent Nehemiah, an Israelite who was a trusted official (cupbearer), to help rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. With Nehemiah went the third wave of returning Jewish exiles. There was intense opposition from the other people in the land, and disunity within Jerusalem. But Nehemiah rebuilt the walls, overcoming his threats by taking wise defensive measures, and leading by his personal example and by his obvious courage. The joy of the Lord was Nehemiah's strength (Neh. 8:10). Nehemiah was in captivity with his people until he was given leave from the Persian King to lead them back to Jerusalem. Nehemiah served twice as governor. The rise of Nehemiah to power, even to be the King's cupbearer, reminds me of Joseph in Genesis and how he rose to power, possibly in a similar way as Nehemiah. But the comparison of Joseph and Nehemiah is mere speculation on my part. Blessings to you, Makarios |
