Bible Question:
A Christian friend of mine told me that the bible does not clearly states we must give tithes to the church. He says it mentions it in the old testament but in the new testament something changed. I did not understand clearly what he meant. He mentioned though that even Paul himself -one of the apostles- did not take money from offerings, but he did work on making tents. He then made a comparison as to why church pastors nowadays depend on church members tithes and offerings for their life subsistence when the apostles themselves who were more actively involved in building and expanding the Christian church did not do so. Would you please guide me and show me the true and correct information regarding this issue? I appreciate your sincere help in this issue. Eyes4Zion |
Bible Answer: Hello Eyes4Zion, Here is some information which I hope will help with the issue of tithing. Did you know that 'food and drink' or lifes needs was the purpose/concern/reason for tithing? Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils after being given food and drink (Genesis14:18-20). Jacob promised to tithe if God would supply food and drink (Genesis 28:15,20-22). In the law if you thithed and kept all of Gods commandments God promised to supply food and drink ect (Deuteronomy 26:12. Malachi 3:10). Yes you are right things changed in the new testament. Jesus promised that if we seek the Kingdom of God that God would supply our needs/food and drink (Matthew 6;31-34).Note this is by faith not by thithing. So if we believe Gods promise are we disrespecting God by expecting through tithing that which is yours by promise? But Godliness with contentment is great gain. and having food and raiment let us be therefore content.(1 Timothy 6:6,8.) The Gospel teaches us not to forget the poor this is know as Ministering/collection for the saints (1 Corinthians 16:1,2). This is not tithing, you are free to put aside whatever you can. I hope this has been helpful to you. M.Royal |
