Bible Question: Ephesians 5:4 what is coarse joking? |
Bible Answer: Hello GME, Eph 5:4 "and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which Bare not fitting, but rather giving of thanks." Coarse jesting is from the Greek word "eutrapelia" from a derivative of the base of troph - trope (meaning well-turned, i.e. ready at repartee, jocose); witticism, i.e. (in a vulgar sense) ribaldry:--jesting. ribaldry: "Behavior or language bordering on indelicacy" It means, we shouldn't be involved in inappropriate joking, we are to abstain from raciness. Notice in the meaning it says "in a vulgar sense". God gave us a sense of humor. Our humor should not have to be censored. It should be fit for all observers. What we may have thought as funny before we were saved should not "tickle our funny bone" anymore. Neither should we listen to or read such things. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 "Abstain from evil [shrink from it and keep aloof from it] in whatever form or whatever kind it may be." Amplified 2Cor 5:17 “Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” In Christ bgg |
