Bible Question: whatdoes the bible say about headcovering?and does that mean that women should cover their head when praying. or that women simply should not cut their hair. |
Bible Answer: Reference ! Cor. 10:14 - 11:16 Headcovering was not Paul's issue in these verses, although I suspect that it was an issue to the Corinthians. Paul's answer to this questions was to first note that "let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-bing", "all things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful; all things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify." The question for them may well have been should wives wear veils while praying or not. Paul's concern was for them to consider more important the question of whether or not the wives were honoring or shaming their husbands according to the cultural norms of the time. Thus he pointed out to them the respect due the husbands as well as the interdependency of marriage. "nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. Then he said "judge among yourselves" And his final note on it all was that if there is contention on the question, the church has no such customs. I take that to mean that veiling has no real religious value as a custom and is not to be compared to such things as communion, baptism, church gatherings, etc. |
