Bible Question: A lady that led one bible study that I was in told me that everyone has the ability to speak in tongues, and that if we can't, we should pray to God to give us that gift. She also said that if we could not speak in tongues, it was a sign that we weren't filled with the Holy Spirit. I don't believe that everyone has this gift, and I don't believe that you have to do it to show that you are filled with the Spirit. What are some thoughts on this? |
Bible Answer: 1Co 12:27 And you are the body of Christ, and members in part. 1Co 12:28 And God set some in the church,FIRSTLY, apostles; SECONDLY, prophets; THIRDLY, teachers, then works of power, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, kinds of languages. Notice here that languages(tongues)is LAST. 1Co 12:29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of power? 1Co 12:30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak languages? Do all interpret? 1Co 12:31 But zealously STRIVE after the BETTER GIFTS. And yet I show to you a more excellent way. Again:note that tongues was last, and that not all speak in tongues(have the gift of speaking in one or more languages) anyway according to Paul, when he says "Do all speak in tongues." The answer is "NO". So how can tongues be the evidence of the Holy Spirit. The Bible says you shall no them by their fruit...Not there prophecy, miricles or tongue speaking. Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith. Also was Paul bragging when he said I thank God I speak in tongues more than you all. What does he no more "Shan de las" than anybody else? |
