Bible Question:
How should this verse be studied? How could one be sure that Jabez is a place named after Jabez in 1 Chronicle 4:9 and are the Kenites descendants of Moses' father-in-law as written by some? Also, is Rechab the same person in Jeremiah 35? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Lois! 1 Chronicles 2:55 is a conundrum of sorts.. :-) If you interpret "Jabez" in 1 Chronicles 2:55 to specify a place or town, then that verse is the only verse in all of Scripture that mentions a place called "Jabez." However, I believe that 1 Chronicles 2:55 is describing an actual place or town called "Jabez" while 4:9,10 are referring to an actual person whose name is "Jabez." As for "how can one be sure that Jabez (the town) is a place named after Jabez (the person) in 1 Chr. 4:9"? You simply can't be sure! That these two are linked in any way - Jabez the person or Jabez the town - is only an assumption, and not specified as such anywhere in Scripture. Since the compiler of Chronicles was obviously himself a scribe, he was interested in tracing, if only briefly, various families of the scribes. These families are obscure and otherwise unknown, as is Jabez, the place where they lived. They were Kenites, a people related to Israel through Moses' marriage to a Kenite, sometimes referred to as a Midianite (Judges 4:11). Naming the Kenite scribes here suggests that they were descended from Judah, since the whole context of the passage is the genealogy of Judah. The genealogy also connects them with Rechab, the saintly founder of a line of pious Israelites who obeyed the commands of their fathers (see Jeremiah 35:1-19). The Kenites were originally a foreign people, but incorporated into the line of Judah (Numbers 10:29-32; Judges 1:16; 4:11). So, yes, I do believe that the Kenites and Midianites are the same, and Rechab is the same person in Jeremiah 35. Blessings to you, Makarios |
