Any insight on the life of Jeremiah? Hello all! I am researching the life of Jeremiah, as he was a young man with an incredible calling. The commentaries I have found don't tell too much. So, if you have some great insight on his life, please help me out! Thank You! |
Bible Answer: Greetings and welcome to the forum! Jeremiah did indeed have a great calling on his life! He is one of the most colorful figures in Hebrew history. More isknown about his personality and character than any other OT prophet. Jeremiah was the son of Hilkiah, the priest, from Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. He heard the call on his life when he was between jut 14-20. Jeremiah, a man of prayer, prophesied for up to 40 years when he died in Egypt about 2 years after the fall of Jerusalem to the Chaldeans in 586 BC. He was known as the "weeping prophet". He is also known as the prophet of the last hour before the destruction of Judah. He preached the coming judgment and counseled Judah to repen and submit to Babylon to remain in the land of Judah. He had such a compassion for his people that it moved him to tears. Being very young when called to the prophetic office, he endeavored to excuse himself on account of his youth and incapacity for the work; but, being overruled by the Divine authority, he undertook the task, and performed it with matchless zeal and fidelity in the midst of a most crooked and perverse people, by whom he was continually persecuted, and whom he boldly reproved, often at the hazard of his life. During his life as a prophet he was threatened, tried for his life, put in stocks, forced to flee from Jehoiakim, publicly humiliated by a false prophet and thrown into a pit.
