Bible Question:
does the laying down of coats symbolize the recognition of royalty? |
Bible Answer: I'm guessing you're talking about the laying down of cloaks as Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem on the day we call "Palm Sunday." If that's a good guess, this may help: Several commentators (NIV and New Bible Commentary) point back to 2 Kings 9:13 as evidence of a common practice of laying down coats as a sign of honor given to a king. My sense is that this might have been done for kings, but may also have been used to recognize anyone under certain circumstances. Not to trivialize it too much, think of the crown you put on a kings head, and the crown you might put on the birthday boy as you light the candles and sing a song. |
