Bible Question: what country had the idol belzee bulb |
Bible Answer: Hi poverton, Beelzebub (Gr. form Beelzebul), the name given to Satan, and found only in the New Testament (Mat 10:25; Mat 12:24, Mat 12:27; Mar 3:22). It is probably the same as Baalzebub (q.v.), the god of Ekron, meaning “the lord of flies,” or, as others think, “the lord of dung,” or “the dung-god.” (Easton's Bible Dictionary) This was the god of the Ekronites, (2Ki 1:2). The word signifies "a masterfly" or the "lord of a fly": and so the Septuagint there call him, "Baal the fly", the god of the Ekronites. And this idol was so called, either because it was in the form of a fly: or else from the abundance of flies about it, by reason of the sacrifices, which it was not able to drive away; and therefore the Jews contemptuously gave it this name. (John Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible) Ekron The most northerly of the five towns belonging to the lords of the Philistines, about 11 miles north of Gath. It was assigned to Judah (Jos 13:3), and afterwards to Dan (Jos 19:43), but came again into the full possession of the Philistines (1Sa 5:10). It was the last place to which the Philistines carried the ark before they sent it back to Israel (1Sa 5:10; 1Sa 6:1-8). There was here a noted sanctuary of Baal-zebub (2Ki 1:2, 2Ki 1:3, 2Ki 1:6, 2Ki 1:16). terrib |
