Bible Question: I am fascinated by Job. Have found many interesting things about the book but can't find the following. What are the philosophies of his four friends? No one works in a vacuum, wondered what they were thinking when they spouted off to Job? |
Bible Answer: Their philosophy was nearly Islamic. By that I mean they held to Karma, if good things happen it is because you are good if bad things happen it is becaused you sin. They kept trying to get Job to confess what he had done so he could seek forgiveness or at least justify their belief in Karma. Many are like that today, if bad things happen they explain it as punishment or retribution for some sin. if good things happen it is God is blessing for righteous living. That is not to say there aren't consequences for sins nor am saying if we living pleasing to God we won't enjoy a better and fuller life. David said in the psalms that the rain falls on the just and unjust. In fat David often complained that the unjust often seemed to have a better life. We have to hold to Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. |
