Bible Question:
What is the Historical Christian Stance on Slavery? Did slavery exist before Christianity? Did the Christian leaders fight slavery or encourage it throughout history? V |
Bible Answer: Vannessa: In our own country the Southern Baptist and Norther Baptist, split over the issue of slavery. Today the Northern Baptist are the American Baptist Churches of the USA. The Southern Baptist Convention still is alive and quite well today. However, as we know they do not support slavery today. As in any war, the Civil war had Christians on both sides. War for me is the ultimate evil. If all the men who died in the Civil War would have lived, and there would have been no Civil War, the population of the United States could have been a third more than now. If we factored in all the babies who been aborthed we would be a different nation! There would not be a population facing less people to support the Social Security System, as the baby boomers must face retirement, many will have to put off retirement to about 72 years of age to retire. That is according to Larry Burkett in Crown Ministries. So if more of our population is faced with working longer, with for the most part, with less expendable income than their parents, we have inslaved ourselves in a different war. Have we not?
