Bible Question:
In considering the prayer of David found in 2 Samuel 7:18-29 with the expectation that the pronouns of Deity would have a total count divisible by three, which translation would you go with? 2 Samuel 7:24, NASB, "For Thou hast established for Thyself Thy people Israel as Thine own people forever, and Thou, O Lord, hast become their God." 2 Samuel 7:24, "For You have made Your people Israel Your very own people forever; and You, Lord, have become their God." Bible Answer: The word "God" is not a pronoun. By definition, God, when capitalized, is a proper noun. (A proper noun is a noun that designates a particular being or thing and is usually capitalized in English.) Furthermore, a pronoun is any of a small set of words in a language that are used as substitutes for nouns or noun phrases and whose referents are named or understood in the context. A pronoun is a SUBSTITUTE for a noun. Thus, "shepherd", "king", "prophet", "priest", "lamb", "lion", etc. -- capitalized or not -- are not pronouns. Why? These words ARE NOUNS. They are not SUBSTITUTES for nouns. (Source of definitions: http://www.m-w.com/) |
