Bible Question:
Studying David's response to Nathan's prophesy and I am confused about this verse. What does the phrase "And this is the law for man" refer to here? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Tauna |
Bible Answer: Tauna Thinking perhaps another translation would help, but I found they only add to the confusion. One presents this verse as David asking God if He deals with everyone like this. In another translation David is saying what God has spoken is instruction for man. Looking KJV or NKJV the verse is a question implying the first definition. In NASB it is a statement implying the second definition. I think the two translations below give the best of both flavors. NLT 2 Samuel 7:19 And now, Sovereign Lord, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving me a lasting dynasty! Do you deal with everyone this way, O Sovereign Lord? ESV 2 Samuel 7:19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD. You have spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord GOD! I then went to Mac Arthur whom I deeply respect and he said. "7:19 a great while to come. David recognized that the Lord had spoken about the distant future, not only about his immediate descendant, Solomon. the manner of man. Lit. “and this is the law of man.” This statement is better taken as a declaration rather than a question, with the idea being that God’s covenant promise is for an eternal kingdom, whereby the whole world of man shall be blessed, through the coming seed of David. The Davidic Covenant is thus a grant, conferring powers, rights, and privileges to David and his seed for the benefit of mankind, a promise that left David speechless" MacArthur, J. J. (1997, c1997).
