Bible Question: I would like anyone competent in Hebrew to comment on the verb tenses in this verse. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Ron! My Hebrew is very rusty, so I'm not sure how 'compentent' I am! :-) However, as best as I can tell, the answer to your question is this: 1) Most of the verbs are Qal Perfects. These can be translated as past, present, or future depending upon the context and construction - though past would be the root ideal. 2) However, there are clues in the verse that future is the tense intended. Note that the verse ends with the two words 'formerly' and 'any more'. These are indicators that something will change in the future. 3) Further, the rest of the passage deals with things which will occur in the future - like the building of the Temple. 4) Finally, the LXX also translates these verbs as Future tenses. Therefore, it appears that the translators decided that the verbs should be translated as future tenses in English. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
