Bible Question:
2 Samuel 1-5 Was Joab devoted to David and his interests. God Bless |
Bible Answer: Greetings Oneness Holy, Yes, Joab, who was David's nephew, commanded David's army, and was a valiant warrior devoted to his King. However, in 2 Samuel 3, Joab kills Abner out of vengeance for Abner's slaying of Asahel (2:23; 3:30). David did not know about this action until later (3:26), and strongly denounced it, considering Joab's actions not in the least justified (3:29). Joab slew Abner in Hebron, which was a city of refuge (Josh. 21:13), where not even a blood avenger could exact revenge on a murderer without a trial (Num. 35:22-25). David further denounces Joab in verse 29 by saying "who takes hold of a distaff", which means one fit for effeminate work, and again in verse 39. However, David does not de-commission him, as he is still commander of David's army in 2 Samuel 8:16. Blessings to you, Makarios |
