Noah waited forty days for the flood to subside before sending out the raven (Genesis 8.6). Israel would be left in the wildernss for forty years (Numbers 14.33; Deuteronomy 2.7). Forty stripes was a standard maximum punishment (Deuteronomy 25.3) Goliath challenged Israel for forty days (1 Sam 17.16). Jonah declared that Nineveh would be destroyed in forty days (Jonah 2.4).
