AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 6:4 There were Nephilim (men of stature, notorious men) on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God lived with the daughters of men, and they gave birth to their children. Subject: Who were the sons of God from Genesis 6 |
Bible Note: There are 3 thoughts on this verse of Scripture. NUMBER 1 - Some propose these "sons of God" are angels. This perspective is purported through Jude 6 and 7. This particular verse from Jude doesn't support or even relate to Genesis 6:2 in any way. THINK ON THIS: If this terrible thing that was going on was the fault of "angels, sons of God," then why was "man" punished by the flood? NUMBER 2: Some think that the "sons of God" were the godly line of Seth who were marrying into unbelievers (the women). This type of action (intermarrying) by God's people went on continually through the Old Testament and those people were never destroyed as in a flood. THINK ON THIS: How can these "sons of God" be believers when Noah was the only one found holy at this time? And also, why is "sons of God" not used this way in any other place in the Bible? NUMBER 3:The "sons of God" were sometimes used to describe kings.(Ex.21:6, 22:8) This would explain that these "sons of God" were immoral men kings who took any woman or women that they desired. These ruler kings were violent and lacked respect for others. If these kings, rulers, were so wicked, they certainly set an evil tone for their kingdoms. Genesis 6:5 says that God saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth at this time. Sexual sins are usually on the top of the list in the Bible when sin is discussed. THINK ON THIS: "Noah found favor and grace in the eyes of the LORD" as he must have been the only man who followed God's ways. SCRIPTURE TO NOTE: • Matthew 22:30 Angels do not marry. • Acts 17:25 He Himself gives to all life and breath and all things. PERSONAL NOTE: I used to believe the "sons of God" were fallen angels but I reasoned out my viewpoint through the Scriptures. In Genesis 1:26, God created man in His image, in His likeness and each thing He created reproduced "after its kind." There could not be angels having children with humans if indeed the "sons of God" were angels. That scenario contradicts Scripture. May God continue to bless your study of His Word! PJC |
