Bible Question: how big was the arc |
Bible Answer: The only measurements that the Bible gives ark in an ancient measurement known as cubits: 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width, and 30 cubits in height.-Genesis 5:15. The proportion of the length to the width is the same used by modern naval architects: 6 to 1. There were 2 intermediate floors-providing 3 levels totaling to about 96,000 square feet. The standards used by the ancients are not clear because there were three different standards argued. The common and most accepted measurement was based on the span between the elbow and the finger tips equivalent to 17.5 inches. However, some scholars and historians suggest that a long cubit (20.4 inches) was employed that addend the span of a hand to the common measurement; and, the short cubit (15 inches) measures from the elbow to the knuckles of a closed fist. The best evidence for a “common standard” is the length of the water tunnel built by King Hezekiah. According to an inscription at this site, the length is 1200 cubits. According to modern measurement, this tunnel equals to 1749 feet-equaling a measurement of 17.5 inches for cubit. |
