AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 5:27 So Methuselah lived nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died. |
Bible Question: I know that people lived longer in OT times, but did people really live hundreds of years? |
Bible Answer: Yes. It is not preposterous to think so for several reasons: 1. God said it was so in His Word. 2. Many ancient societies have legends of a 'golden age' where lifespans reached almost 1000. (Many times these legends are based in some sort of truth, most ancient societies also have flood legends.) 3. There is no physiological reason why humans should necessarily have to die(if nothing goes wrong) and the antediluvian life was greatly different from ours now: - A. They were probably eniterly vegatarian(Gen. 1:29-30, Gen. 9:3). - B. There was most likely some sort of an atmospheric barrior of water(Gen. 1:6-8, Gen. 7:11, 2 Pet. 3:5-6), that probably caused it not to rain(Gen. 2:5-6), and would have protectecd from the harmful rays from the sun, and would most likely have created a warm, oxygen rich environment. - C. They had a significantly more pure gene pool. - - All increadibly conducive to longevity. 4. The existence of 'Neanderthal' type fossil remains. High-tech age progression software used by the FBI when progressed to the near 1000 range creates 'Neanderthal' like men, for several reasons, the brow-bone never stops growing, we begin to slouch, with age on the spine, etc. All of this evidence that goes to say that it is clearly possible, is insignificant compared to the truth that omniscient God said it was so, and an omnipotent God could have made it so. royfish |
