Bible Question:
Dear Family in Christ...... What was a "temple prostitute" of GE 38:21, or "cult prostitute" of DT 23:17. (The NIV uses "shrine prostitue" for these verses.) What was it that these men and women did that was different, or unique in some way, from other prostitutes of their time. Any Scriptural description? God Bless....Jensen |
Bible Answer: Jensen the word translated prostitute is Qadesh and is referenced or used 8 times in the bible, Gen 38:21-22: Deut. 23:17; I Kings 14:24; I Kings 15:12; I Kings 22:46; Job 36:14; Hosea 4:14. It is talking about prostitutes that are connected to religious ceremonies or are fulfilling religious obligations. The Babylonians, compelled every native female to attend the temple of Venus once in her life and to prostitute herself in honor of the goddess. Canaan had many deities that required prostitutes to be in service. Men were not exempt from service in many religions and performed acts of sodomy. Again these were man made religions fulfilling man’s lust of the flesh. God in Deut. 23:17 clearly forbids such practice. EdB |
