AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 38:18 He said, "What pledge shall I give you?" She said, "Your seal and your cord, and the staff that is in your hand." So he gave them to her and was intimate with her, and she conceived by him. |
Bible Question: What is the significance of the seal, the cord and the staff? Were these legal items of identity? Is there a spiritual significance here? |
Bible Answer: Dear Momma, I hope that you are doing well, ma'am. We would not see "spiritual significance" as an exegetical approach unless we are told elsewhere in Scripture that such significance exists. Over spiritualizing a Biblical text is a very old problem, that we would want to eschew. Apparently these three items were worth more than the service provided, and probably more than the agreed upon fee. Thus, the collateral must have seemed reasonable to Judah in assuring the "prostitute" that he would return with the payment. In addition, Tamar was now in possession of personal items that would help her prove that Judah was the father of her child; which thing took place just as she planned. In Him, Doc |
