NASB | Genesis 38:18 He said, "What pledge shall I give you?" And she said, "Your seal and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 38:18 He said, "What pledge shall I give you?" She said, "Your seal and your cord, and the staff that is in your hand." So he gave them to her and was intimate with her, and she conceived by him. |
Bible Question: What is the significance of the seal, the cord and the staff? Were these legal items of identity? Is there a spiritual significance here? |
Bible Answer: All three could be used to signify a person's authority. The seal was made by signet ring or cylinder with the owner's marking. These items were carried on a cord around ones neck or worn as a ring. The staff could be simply for walking or protection, but it could also designate ones position of authority. Brad |
