Bible Question: what does the bible say about using birth control methods |
Bible Answer: Many people, especially Roman Catholics, use this verse as an indictment against birth control. The entire reference is Gen 38:8-10. Here it is in the NIV: Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also. This kind of birth control is called "coitus interruptus." However, others are of the opinion that Onan's condemnation was for not wanting to father the offspring for his brother, rather than the method by which he avoided it. Scripture is not clear -- in my opinion -- except in the case of abortion. Abortion is specifically prohibitted in any form. |
