NASB | Genesis 33:17 Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built for himself a house and made booths for his livestock; therefore the place is named Succoth. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 33:17 But Jacob journeyed [north] to Succoth, and built himself a house and made shelters for his livestock; so the name of the place is Succoth (huts, shelters). |
Bible Question:
Does this verse mean that Jacob did not go to Seir and in V14 he was just cheating Esau for he was still afraid of Esau taking revenge? From what has been portrayed, Jacob seems to be a man of suspicious. Somehow, I would consider that if Jacob did go to Seir and stayed with Esau, the tragedy in Chapter 34 could be avoided. Thanks for your input and Shalom Azure |
Bible Answer: God's day to you, my sister, Azure, We will never know why Israel/Jacob did not go to Seir, this side of heaven. Most events in the Bible and elsewhere where people had choices. The results/ consequences probably would have been different. God is in control of circumstances and knows the future. Dinah still may have visited in Seir. We don't know if Esau had his people circumised. It wasn't just what happened in chapter 34 ... but it is possible that Joesph being sold and all the other events may not have happened. I am thinking since Israel/Jacob just wrestled with God in the previous chapter, he may of thought it best not to go to Seir. Searcher |
