Bible Question:
Please explain, in the simplest of terms, what this story is all about. Why does Jacob wrestle with God? Is it literal or figurative? thanks, beth |
Bible Answer: Greetings beth! Here is another good quote.. "32:24 The man who wrestled Jacob is called an angel in Hos. 12:4 and was evidently the preincarnate Christ. Jacob's wrestling involved agonizing prayer (Hos. 12:4). 32:25-28 God allowed Himself to be overcome by Jacob, though He crippled him (whether temporarily or for the rest of his life is not stated). His limp, however, was proof that this was no mere dream. The Lord wanted to depart before daylight lest Jacob see Him (cf. Ex. 33:20), but Jacob insisted on being blessed first. So God changed his name from Jacob to Israel, which means "he fights or persists with God" (in prevailing prayer)." Taken from the Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible (pg. 57, 1995, The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago) Yes, I believe that Jacob literally wrestled with the Angel of the Lord, the preincarnate Lord Jesus Christ, as well as wrestling through agonizing prayer. The "physical" contact is evidenced through the limp that Jacob received, since God proved that He could completely disable Jacob at will if He so chose. However, He allowed Jacob to have the victory through his physical struggle with God and through prayer. Jacob proved victorious throughout his struggles in life: 1) with Esau (chapters 25-27); 2) with his father (chapter 27); 3) with his father-in-law (chapters 29-31); 4) with his wives (chapter 30); and 5) with God at Peniel (v.28).
