NASB | Genesis 3:22 ¶ Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"-- |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 3:22 ¶ And the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), knowing [how to distinguish between] good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take from the tree of life as well, and eat [its fruit], and live [in this fallen, sinful condition] forever"-- |
Bible Question: Who are Us? Does this mean that there were more than Adam, Eve, and our Lord God (Gen 3:8) in the garden? The amplified version suggests this is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but could this also be angels? The reason I ask this is because it's suggested in the words "take also" that someone else is eating from the tree of life to live forever, and I don't believe that God would create a tree that he would have to eat from to stay immortal. Can anyone help me out? I'm confused. |
Bible Answer: My understanding the 'Us' is God who is speaking on behalf of all the heavenly host. The 'take also' is referring to them eating the fruit of life just as they had eaten the fruit of tree of good/evil. The phrasing of the scripture can make it a little confusing. I don't care for paraphrased Bibles much, but once in a while they come in handy. 22 Then the LORD God said, "Look, the human beings* have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!" |
