AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 29:17 Leah's eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance. |
Subject: Leah's eye's lovely? |
Bible Note: The King James Version renders Leah's eyes in Gen. 29:17 as 'tender', which is #7390 in Strong's Concordance which reads, "tender by impl. 'weak'; -faint [-hearted], soft, tender ([-hearted], one), weak." (pg. 108 of Hebrew and Chaldee Dictionary). The Ryrie Expanded Edition NASB Study Bible (1995, Moody Press) comments, "Leah's eyes were weak. Either her eyes were visually weak or they lacked luster, which was a great defect among people who admired sparkling eyes. All three patriarchs' wives were beautiful (Sarah, Gen. 12:11; Rebekah, Gen. 24:15-16; and, here, Rachel)." But of course, Leah had more children and was the mother of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Dinah (a daugher). Also, Leah's maid, Zilpah, bore two more sons to Jacob, Gad and Asher. These were more children than Rachel bore to Jacob, Joseph and Benjamin, even though these two boys were Jacob's 'favorites'.. However, Rachel had to 'bear' children for her husband through her maid Bilhah, who bore Dan and Naphtali, which was no doubt humiliating and a source of frustration for Rachel. Good question, prayon! |
