Bible Question: why was God still called the God of jacob and not the God of israel after changing his name from jacob to israel |
Bible Answer: nwamaka, I believe the answer is found in the promise that God made to Jacob in Gen. 28:13 "And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants." Further, is the fact that Jacob "strove with God"- the meaning of the name Israel in the scenario in Gen. 32:27-32: "So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.”Then Jacob asked him and said, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And he blessed him there. So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved.”Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh. Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip." Part of the reasoning may lie in the fact that Jacob (and Isreal) had not yet entered into the Promised Land. It is interesting to note in this regard, Joseph's parting words in Gen. 50:42, "Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob."
